Wedgnock Summer Series Race 1 - 21 May
23 | John Wilson | 43:38 |
Report: John Wilson
The recent rain turned this into a wetter race than the 'Winter Mud and Mayhem' earlier in the year. The first half of the race being through muddy fields and through kissing gates meant it was difficult to get any rhythm going. However by half way the course was mainly tarmac and gravel allowing the legs to stretch out nicely.
There was a good turnout of 126 runners but only the one from Northbrook. A very enjoyable run over very picturesque countryside; others should think about joining me for the following three races of the series in June, July and August. Hopefully dryer weather will permit faster times.
Very happy with my 23rd placed finish. The race was a little over 10K so to be so close to a PB bodes well for the 10K and 5M races coming up over the Summer.

Report: Tony Mackness
The man at the BBC weather centre got it spot on this time. Driving down to Oxford it was a nice sunny Sunday morning. As I got closer to my destination the skies started to get grey and I just knew I was in for a soaking!! With two minutes before the off the heavens opened and continued to do so throughout the early stages of the race.
This year the race took a different route for some reason. The start was on a road too narrow to accommodate over 3000 runners, and we were faced with the age old problem of runners not lining up according to their estimated finishing time making it difficult to get off to a good start. A flat course with lots of twists and turns, and the last three kilometres through the park on narrow footpaths. Despite the rain an enjoyable run.

Great race this one. I'd been meaning to do it for a few years but it always clashed with something, and Howard had always been banging on about it as a race to do so I thought I'd give it a bash. I'd had a shocker at London two weeks previously even though I PB'd there so I was keen to make amends at Hinckley to prove a point to myself.
Well organised race, no real hiccups but it was just SO hot! Everyone suffered and although the last 2.1 miles were downhill/flat it was little comfort when you were trying to lift the pace.
I managed a PB of over 3mins which I was pleased at considering the conditions. It's a great race and one which is a bit of a hidden gem - no real hills and a nice scenic route. As Steve Mason quite rightly said afterwards "that would make a lovely Sunday morning run".

The dismal Bank Holiday weather wasn't enough to prevent a bumper 25 runner turnout from Northbrook - plus an army of very vocal supporters (thanks for all the encouragement - you know who you are!).
With so many important races over the next few weeks it was great to see so many of our runners hitting a purple patch. Paul Andrew ran a superb race to claim second place whilst John Hosie and Mike Wheeler both notched up impressive PBs.

Vancouver Half-Marathon

Andy Kelsall and the Vancouver skyline
Andy Kelsall | 2:13:21 |
Report: Andy Kelsall
My finishing time of 2:13:21 was yet another PB, the 13th consecutive.
The course was a lot 'hillier' than I expected which meant that I paid the price for starting off too quickly. The route started out by taking us out into Chinatown before turning north towards the coast. There was a number of rolling hilly sections here. Nothing too arduous, but the constant up and down made for a strength sapping start. This wasn't helped by the glorious hot sunny day (even though the race started at 07:00 Pacific time).
Once we had picked up the coast road, we headed West again all the way back and on into Stanley Park. Stanley Park is a beautiful location and the route took us on the road around the outside of the park so that we had the constant backdrop of the Pacific Ocean on our right with the mountains in the distance and the park with its trees, flower displays and numerous attractions (totem poles, lighthouses etc) on the left.
At the 12 km mark came the really big hill. In the next 1 km we climbed just over 200 feet to the top of Prospect Point. The supporters were out in force here giving everyone a gee-up to just get to the top of the hill. Once at the top, we had a 200 feet descent over the next 2 km. We then ran out of Stanley Park and down to pick up Pacific Boulevard and on toward the finish.
The race was well attended (over 12,000) and extremely well marshaled and organised.
Here's a link to a map of the very scenic route
