Glen Eden 10mile - Auckland, New Zealand 25 July

While visiting our daughter recently in New Zealand, Anne and I entered the 'famous in New Zealand' Glen Eden 10 mile road race. This was hosted by the Glen Eden running club based in Auckland on the North Island of New Zealand. This, the oldest established road race in Auckland, was held on 25th July, the weather being bright and sunny - and surprisingly warm considering it is their winter. Around 80 runners started a very well organized event, with chip timing and lots of marshals giving encouragement.
The course starts at the clubhouse in West Auckland, around 25km from the city centre and heads out to the Waitakeres ranges, a beautiful green and hilly national park popular with walkers, runners and cyclists. After an undulating start in a residential area there followed a very challenging 4km climb out in the ranges, the final 3 miles back to the start was a twisting downhill road.
After the race all runners, their families and helpers were invited into the clubhouse for an impressive afternoon tea of home made cakes and sandwiches and welcome mugs of tea; this was followed by a lengthy prizegiving at which we, as UK visitors, got a special mention.

Report: Sarah McNaney
We picked out this race as we had never done it before, it was on a Saturday and it started at 6pm. It took about 1 hour 15 minutes to get there but was well worth it.
Having been billed as a mildly undulating course, we were fairly confident about getting round the course but not breaking any speed barriers. One of the marshals on arrival told us not to believe the details as it was quite hilly. However, having met up with Myshola Kirkham (who was first lady) and been told that the course was very good and that there was only one real hill, we decided to just relax and enjoy the course and what ever it threw at us. Well, what a course it was. It was very scenic and not too hilly at all. The route seemed to meander through some very lovely virtually traffic free lanes. The only hill was on our return at about 10 miles but I just kept thinking of Lance Armstrong's words the other night when he said that on the hill climbs, if he was hurting, so was everyone else behind him. It certainly made me dig in deep and get to the top, unlike some of the people I had been playing cat and mouse with for a few miles!!
Facilities at the end - very good. Goody Bag - very interesting with loads
of odd things like a toothbrush and 6 sachets of Horlicks!!
On the whole, we will all do this again as it has the potential as a PB course
as there are plenty of fast flat bits. Roll on next year as we will be back.

Fantastically organised run over a challenging and hilly (Steve said to emphasise the fact that it was hilly) off road course. The route took you through the forest, along tracks and, thanks to the stupidly heavy rain the night before, rather a lot of mud. The downhill start, we quickly realised, meant one thing... the same mile... back to the finish... uphill... Really enjoyed the run. - Alix
Wedgnock Summer Series Race 3 - 16 July
28 | John Wilson | 44:18 | Overall 15th position after race 2 |
Despite the onslaught of the English monsoon season, the 3rd race of the series went ahead as planned. The motivation being placed 15th overall in the series and hoping the 14 above me didn't like the rain! As expected there were muddy fields to negotiate, however the 'cows' in the field had quickly grown some appendages and were clearly masquerading as over protective bulls! The cooler weather meant some were able to post slightly quicker times, unlike myself who carried on with the pattern of being 30 seconds slower in each race

Centro revenues received a boost when two-dozen fare-paying Northbrook runners took the 7.18pm train from Tile Hill to Hampton in Arden. Accompanied by a few other members in possession of senior travelpasses, they met up in Hampton in Arden with ten fellow club members who had run the distance from Tile Hill.
The whole contingent then raced back to Tile Hill over a part road/part off-road 9km (5.6mile) route that took in Marsh Lane, Bradnock Marsh, and part of the Heart of England Way through to Berkswell, finishing with a 1-mile grind up Spencers Lane and an easier 1-mile downgrade back to Tile Hill station. Clive Horton took the award for taking the wrong route (twice).
The evening rounded off with a sweaty Northbrook crowd taking over the lounge bar of The Bell in Tile Hill village.
