Hatton Multi-Terrain 5m - 27 September
Charles Jones | 39:10 |
Amazingly it was exactly the same time to the second as my last year's effort, and if I'd kept tabs on my time a bit more accurately then who knows, I might have managed a course PB. Excellent course and organisation, and super weather, if not a little too warm on the last k.

Berlin is famous for being a fast flat course, so it was with some optimism that the intrepid foursome made their way over to the German capital to give Haile a run for his money and fly the Northbrook flag.
The famed German efficiency was not to be seen at the start, as we all got stuck in queues leading to the starting pens, and ended up having to barge past people and climb over fences just to get to the correct area. The crowds of slow runners for the first 20K were a bit frustrating but after that they spread out, and apart from a few scraps at the water stations it was pretty good going after that. The heat really picked up in the second half, reaching close to 25ºC, so it was all the more impressive that Tony put in a lightning quick 3hr 13min time, cutting 5 minutes off his PB, and with a 6.35 final mile! James also PB'd at 3hr 36min, 19 minutes off his previous best time, with Paul and Clive also both putting in great runs.
Fortunately the famed German hospitality was up to our expectations, with various pilseners being sampled afterwards. Oh, and if you are ever in Berlin and in need of some bread, Clive can recommend a very friendly bakery.

Mark Baker won silver in the Welsh Masters' Championship
This is a challenging single loop around the island of Anglesey, with a steady climb to the finish from 22 miles. Dave began strongly moving ahead after 2 miles, but I ran at my own pace, and eventually caught up with Dave at 17 miles. We were still close together at 23 miles, but the final climb was a real test.
At the presentation I was awarded the silver medal in the Welsh Masters' Championship, presented by Robin McBryde (ex Wales rugby international).
This would be an excellent club event in the future with a range of distances available, including a marathon, half-marathon, 10Km and fun run.

The heat and sun really brought the runners and supports out this year - it was packed and steaming hot! In all the years I have run this race I have never known it to be so busy and that made long spells of steady running nearly impossible.
My objective this year was to run with my brother and get him a PB. He PB'd last year (2:23) but he really wanted to get under 2:20. Unfortunately due to a few personal reasons he hadn't managed to do any real training for the race and wasn't feeling confident. He set off (as he always does) too quickly and I had to rein him back. By half way he was really struggling ("I have daggers digging into my calves") but all credit to him when I said push he did his best and when I allowed him to rest he was grateful!
At 11 miles he was easily on for 2:20 and I asked him if he wanted to push a bit and try for 2:15... "NO!". So we settled down to get a solid sub 2:20. We went over in 2:17:09 - a PB for him and a new course record for me!
Thank you to all the club members who have helped me with my training, and in particular to Brian Knox who really has helped to prove that I can run faster than I ever thought possible!
Andy Kelsall
Perfect conditions yet again. John ran a great PB despite being spotted in Newcastle's bars in the early hours of saturday morning. I had my best run here yet, and Andy was happy to get around in not too much pain after sustaining a back injury squeezing himself onto a kids' ride at Legoland !
A great weekend, number 10 next year.
Stephen Mason
After starting right at the back amidst the fun runners I finished in 1.48.20. Not a good time, but in view of the crowded streets I’m quite satisfied. From an entertainment/support in the streets/sheer size point of view it was the best half-marathon I’ve run, but for PB potential I’d say terrible.

Well we didn't qualify for the national 6-stage but after a summer of injuries, and with so many runners unavailable it was hardly surprising. We missed out by 1 place or about 40 seconds according to my slightly dodgy arithmetic.
Special mention must go to Jerry Trill's excellent time and the shock I got when Paul passed over to me with us so high up the field. Equally my personal thanks to Dave Cooper and John Andrew who stepped in at the last minute to ensure that we were able to finish with a complete second team.
Results of the 4-stage Midland CC will be out just as soon as the organisers decide that they are not actually a matter of national security and decide to publish them.

Nottingham Marathon - 13 September
24 | Martyn Brunt | 2:56:53 | 8th vet |
My first sub 3-hour marathon. A very well organised and supported race. Hilly first half of the course, mostly flat second half although lots of twists and turns. The first half of the course combines with the half marathon so it was busy but the course was sufficiently wide to prevent any hold ups. I finished 8th vet - still not used to being in that category!

Anne Hughes | 1:52:50 |
Anne and I again ran the Lake Vyrnwy half, 4th time for Anne, 3rd for me. This is one of our favourite races, more or less flat and the scenery is beautiful. It's a very friendly race, well organized and with great support at the finish. The weather was warm and sunny and we were grateful for the shade offered by the trees around the lake. Anne came in well under 2 hours and narrowly missed out on a PB, finishing 7th in her age group; I was very pleased to achieve a PB by 7 minutes.
