Northbrook - 6th team.
Just did the most mental XC course, ever. Up, down, twists, turns, bridge crossing, stream crossing, sand, shale, clay,
mud, steps, concrete. Brilliant!
Excellent cross country race today, well done everyone from Northbrook.

British & Irish Masters Cross Country International 8Km Open Race, Perry Park, Birmingham - 14 November

This Open Race was the last event in the day's programme and followed on from the international races involving teams from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. By the time the 100 or so runners assembled at 2.30 pm the day's heavy rain had finally relented, although by then the course had been well churned up by the preceding races. Apart from me there was local representation from Pete Banks (Coventry Godiva Harriers, 36.10) and Ian Gower (Sphinx AC, 36.47) as well as Northbrook second claim man and Republic of Ireland reserve Mick Duggan (31.53 for the 6 km distance).

Still referred to as the Rugby 'Ten', this year's race was moved back from Draycote Water to the more familiar lanes around Barby, Kilsby and Hillmorton for a 15 km route. In other words, it took in much of the old Rugby Ten course but with a start and (uphill) finish in the village of Barby.
However, a last minute diversion required by the police meant that an extra 0.3 mile was added to the route. If my metric to imperial conversion is accurate this extended the course to 9.6 miles - so a bit closer to the original 'Ten' than expected! Well done to the marshalls for reacting so quickly and shepherding the runners around their unexpected detour into Hillmorton.

The Wedgnock winter series has now moved to a new home, somewhere in the Cotswolds. For anyone thinking of doing this race then I would recommend it. For anyone looking for a quick 10K, then go elsewhere, this is now a brutal course. It's never a good sign when my car struggles to get up the hill to the start, and then after only 8 minutes I am reduced to walking.
Good to see Steve and John also making the effort to support a friendly, low key local(ish) race. I took advantage of the extra distance run by the 2 leaders, God knows where they ended up, to grab third place. I believe that Steve also decided 10k wasn't far enough and took a small group of runners on an alternative route!!!

I decided a few weeks back that I needed to get a ten miler in before the end of the year, having missed out on Nuneaton due to injury. For some reason, this race flashed up a few times when searching. It was billed as 'challenging' but as it was a ten miler, I managed to persuade Craig and Corinna to come along too. Imagine our suprise to find John there as well!!
The day started with torrential rain, and to be honest we were tempted to pack our flippers and wetsuits rather than trainers, but thankfully the rain had stopped by the start of the race. We knew that it was going to be a bit hilly but on arriving we were informed that part of the course was flooded and therefore would throw at us a few challenges. We all decided to wear our old trainers (thank God) as by mile 5 we'd been through some quite deep pockets of water. (and here was me saying I didn't want to do x-country this year!). Mile 5 through to nearly 7 were uphill and, through gritted teeth, we made it to the top before having about a mile descent. The rest of the course was reasonably undulating.
The course was hilly - think Cotwsold Hilly 100 and you've go the picture. But
it was well marshalled, and to be honest was quite a pretty route. It's
not a PB course for anyone thinking of doing it next year, but I would recommend
it as one to do again.
The huge cups of coffee at the end were just what was needed !!!
