Chester Marathon - 31 May

After the shocker I had at London (3h 32mins, personal worst time) I knew I had a better time in me. Chester seemed to fit the bill perfectly, an out and back course along a quiet greenway, traffic free and very well organised. This was the first year of the event but you wouldn't know it, it was well run and no hiccups. I got into a small group that was working well from 5 miles, and up until 21 miles we were all on for sub 3h 15 with change. We went through halfway in 1h 36min, so it was pretty even racing all the way round.

I'd definitely recommend this race to others as it's only 2hrs away and is a low-key event with PB potential. It's much less hassle than the big city marathons, and with nice goodies afterwards it has a lot going for it. - Richard

A great evening for the race, with the rain just about holding off for us. A very hilly course from the start and then especially from 3.5 to 5 (takes your breath away).  Meeting some lovely runners from this race series. Next week it's the Weedon 10k, another hilly and challenging course. - Lyn

A bit on the cold side and a jostle start, but a lovely hilly course nevertheless. ... and a course PB for me (4th attempt). - Charles

Northbrook won 2nd place prize in the 'B' Race (6am start) - every runner won a Hilly 100 T-shirt and a crystal paperweight. Conditions were very hot and difficult which slowed down all times this year.

Thanks to Team Captain Alix Critchley for organising the Northbrook team entry, and to Tony Hughes who stepped in at the last minute - Mark Baker

Edinburgh Marathon - 23 May

916 Stephen Mason 3:32:33 PB

A very scenic course that started in the city centre and then headed along the coast to Musselburgh race course at nine miles. The rest of the route was then 17 miles out and back, continuing along the coast and with a finish in front of the grandstand on the race course.
As scenic as this was, the out and back bit became quite tedious with very little or no support and long stretches where you could see other runners miles in front. After a short loop through some remote countryside, where a wooded section at least gave some relief from the sun - temperatures reaching 73 degrees - it was time to turn around and head back the remaining 8 miles, passing the slower runners.
I was hoping to break 3.30, and this was still on at mile 22, having passed a couple of Sphinx runners who are normally faster than me at mile 19. Unfortunatley I slowed down in the final 2-3 miles, but did still manage a PB by 4 minutes. All in all I probably won't do this one again, although it is an alternative for anyone not getting into London.
Finally thanks to Andy Miles and the girls who missed seeing me at mile 9 due to a dispute with a taxi driver and a £50 fare, but did find a spot to cheer me in at the finish despite only having 5 good legs between them. - Steve

The weather was unexpectedly fine following the downpours of the last two days, almost ideal conditions in the Leicestershire countryside. Started off well, going at sub 1:30 pace for the first 4 or 5 miles to try and become a member of the exclusive club recently created by Messrs. Critchley, Joyce and Stead. Alas, it was not to be. Running into the wind from miles 7 to 10 used up too much energy so that by the time I got to ‘Kilimanjaro’ at miles 10 to 11 there was nothing left. Coasted down to the finish line for the last two miles into the pleasant and well supported finish at Market Bosworth Water Park. A very enjoyable and expertly organised race, set in the very nice setting of the water park. Someone find me a flat race next time for my sub 1:30 attempt! - John Wilson

A typical cold, blustery English bank holiday Monday.  Runners had to contend with strong winds, rain and even hailstones at one point.  Slightly different course, completely within Memorial Park with the start at the central pavilion and the finish at the top end of the park 2.5 laps later.  Think they had some slight timing issues, official times around 3 secs slower than watches. - Corinna O'Connor
