Trent Park Triffic Trail 10k - 27 June

7 John Hosie 38:12 4th SM

This is the third time I have turned up to do this North London off road 10k, and the third time I have finished 7th. It was hot and I was enjoying myself taking it easy until being barged out the way by another runner at 3k, (London tactics obviously). The runner who did this finished 8th, as this seemed to make me want to beat him!!!

For once the weather on T & F night was seasonably warm and dry, with a bit of a breeze along the home straight to remind everyone that this is summer in the UK. Good conditions then for those who turned up at Warwick University's athletics track for a Club evening a little different from the usual Wednesday night programme.

Bob Adams had skilfully put together a varied programme of events, and with the assistance of Mark Baker and John, Janet and Andy Ralph to look after timings, measuring and generally keeping the athletes in order, activities progressed at a rapid pace.

In the Mens' 800, Rob Pool was 10 secs clear after lap 1, but with a 71sec split Paul Stead took victory on the final sprint.

Whilst performances on the track may have been predictable, the field events disclosed some hitherto unknown talents.

Linda Richards produced the performance of the night with a demonstration quality fourth leg in the relay egg and spoon race, egg and spooning to victory from last place at the final spoonover.

Once again we were blessed with excellent weather conditions for the new Harborough 5 mile course. It was basically the old course in reverse direction with the Gartree prison bit replaced by a field runaround at Foxton Locks. This resulted in a challenging mile-long hill at miles 3 to 4. Despite the hill, and the off-road sections, the Northbrookers paced themselves well to come home in decent times. - Charles

This was a new course for this race, starting with a lap of a field which helped you from from going off too fast, then onto the main road. The first few miles were undulating, then from mile 3 it seemed to be hill after hill upwards. To the finish it was another lap of the field from where l could see Charles in his sprinting mode. Trying to stay by his side, we crossed the finish line shoulder to shoulder, it would have made a great photo finish. - Lyn

Baslow Bootbash - 12 June

  Paul Stead 4h 30m

Starting in the grounds of Chatsworth House this circular 26.5 mile tour of Derbyshire was thoroughly enjoyable. An unmarked route calls for some good OS map reading which all adds to the challenge and I was pleasantly surprised to be 3rd finisher and still feeling fresh - Paul

As ever the Two Castles is a popular local race with the 3000 entries full by February. Coupled with the Warwickshire Amateur Athletic 10km championship it made it even more popular.

Thankfully good weather was with us for the start of the event although it did get a bit hotter for the later runners as the sun started to come out. A different finish this year took us into Kenilworth Castle from the car park meaning you got a sense of the crowd a little earlier encouraging that last attempt at effort a little earlier.

Support was sparse in the earlier miles of the race but was much improved coming into Kenilworth, and the crowd in the castle were superb. Thanks to whoever was doing the commentary for calling out my name and number 50 yards from the finish and letting me know that I had sprint to keep my position.

It was very enjoyable and well worth the effort, hopefully we can encourage more to participate next year. This was not a race to be targeting my first sub 40min 10km, I think that might have to wait a few months, but happy overall to net a PB ( 1 min off my previous best 10km time). Thanks to John Hosie for offering to pace me round, however I was already ‘off pace’ after 11 yards so I’m glad I gave up on that one.

Remember to enter early for next year, about Christmas time is usually the best! - John Wilson

Stockholm Marathon - 5 June

367 Martyn Brunt 3:04:07
417 Howard Andersen 3:06:06

Full results at www.stockholmmarathon.se

Unlike most marathons which are held on Sunday mornings, the Stockholm Marathon starts at 2.00 pm on a Saturday afternoon.  This means that, as the race is held in June, conditions can be on the warm side and, this year, the temperature hovered around the 20 degrees mark.

The two lap route has to be one of the most scenic I have ever run. Long stretches are run alongside water and there is a 10k section that winds itself through a large park which is partly wooded (affording some shade from the afternoon sun). To cap it off, there is a memorable finish in Stockholm's 1912 Olympic Stadium. Although it is scenic, this is not a fast course and there are quite a few sharp inclines plus tougher climbing on some of the approaches to the numerous bridges that the route crosses. This, and the warm conditions, meant that it was not a day for fast times.

Having said that, Brunty and me were still, respectively, 5th and 7th British athletes to finish. In terms of organisation, the race is second to none.  Refreshment stations are every two miles and, in addition to  the usual water or sports drinks, some of them have pickled gherkins, vegetable stock or cola available!  And, the race entry fee includes free admission to a pasta party the evening before the race.

In summary, a great marathon in a magnificent city but not necessarily the one to notch up that PB. - Howard
