Andrew and I ran in the Stratford Big 10k on Sunday. Andrew finished in 43rd place and I finished 205th, 1st in my age
group. I don't suppose any other 70 year old is mad enough to run that far.
The race started from the race course, and it
was a bit messy at the check-in as everyone had to pick up their numbers and timing chips. It could have been a problem
with a greater number of entries, although nearly 400 finished the race. From the start the route took us across
the race course and then along the greenway, the old railway track, for about 2 miles into a stiff wind. When we got
to the end and turned back towards the town it was a little better apart from a longish hill after 4.5miles. After that
it was mostly down hill to the finish near the bandstand where we collected a goodie bag, a T- shirt and
2 sausages courtesy of the sponsor, Aubrey Allen (where were you Sarah?). I wasn't very pleased with my time, but after
a long lay off through injury I musn't complain - John Ralph

After the terrible weather all week the weather gods must have been smiling down at us on Friday evening. Almost perfect running weather appeared as if by magic, with enough sunshine to keep out the cold and dry the paths out a little bit. It was nice to see a good turn-out from Northbrook, supporting the local races as someone may have mentioned a few times on a Wednesday evening! The race split off almost immediately, with the big guns of Godiva disappearing off into the distance, never to be seen again. There was some welcome support from Cath, Alix and Bob. I'm sure that they realised the 'photograph pose' on the first lap didn't reappear for the second and third! This was a Warwickshire League race, although not all the Northbrook runners seemed to be correctly represented on the results lists so far. Hopefully we can get them to sort it out as It would be nice to see the club rewarded for the efforts of its runners.
Overall a cracking race, brilliant fun. Someone just needs to tell me to stop running at some point! - John W.

This was a 6-lap course around Hackney Marshes in East London, not far from the 2012 Olympic Stadium. Underfoot there were tarmac paths, grass fields and gravel trails. Conditions were very humid. I was visiting my brother, who set a PB by running 5 minutes faster than in the 2009 Coventry Half Marathon - Mark

The Long Tour of Bradwell - 8 August

And so it was back to Derbyshire this weekend for another beautiful run in the sun. Setting off from Bradwell this 32 mile incredibly undulating circular route covers over 6000ft of ascent and takes you through Edale, by Ladybower Reservoir and up onto Stanage Edge to name a few of the places. This run was about getting time on feet, miles in legs and keeping strong both physically and mentally. Everytime you do one of these events you learn a little bit more about what to carry, what to eat, how much to eat, when to run, when to walk. It gets incredibly hard at times, especially when it's warm ( I really really dislike running in warm weather, roll on Autumn/Winter), but it all gets forgotten when you finish.

On holiday in the Lake District Anne and I and our daughter Katy decided to run the Ellenborough 10k. The run started and finished at Netherhall rugby club in Maryport, North-West Cumbria on the evening of 4th August. 167 runners completed an enjoyable course run mainly on country lanes, including two challenging hills. The race was followed by a complimentary buffet and prize-giving.
Anne finished in 53:38, winning her age group, my time was 44:15, second in
age group, and Katy came home in 54:48. - Tony

A wonderful, run-thrilled, thunderful, fun filled historic event took
place in the Staffordshire countryside at the weekend. Catton Park was the
setting for the 2nd Adidas 24hr Thunder Run, and this year they had the Northbrook
posse was in town intent on taking no prisoners and more importantly getting
no sleep.
The Thunder Run is an endurance event with runners competing either solo,
in pairs or in teams of five or eight to cover as much distance as they can in
24 hours. It's run as a relay around a 10k course, off road with plenty of technical
bits - running through woods, up and down hills, through fields - a fantastic
course.
Eight worthy warriors lined up for battle, Corinna and Sean O'Connor, Cath Fenn, Alix Critchley, James Joyce, John Wilson, Paul Stead and Dave Fawkner, all for one and one for all, ready to push on through and do what was necessary to succeed.
As the smoke lifted, and the sun baked down it was left to the bravest of them all to bring the hammer down on the 24 hour thunder beast as Thor Wilson led home his battle weary challengers to a 9th place category finish and a 16th place overall.

What a FANTASTIC result, 9th out of 72 teams in the mixed 8 competition, and 16th in terms of distance covered overall out of all of the competitors/teams there. We ran 290km - that's just over 180 miles in 24 hours and 23 minutes. A *SUPERB* team result. Cath, Corinna, Sean and Alix all covered 30k each, James, Paul and Dave 40k each and John 50k!
The pace folks kept up on some of the laps was mind blowing. It was a superb weekend and an incredible team performance. There was a real festival atmosphere all weekend - more than 1,000 people camped. Hot showers, great facilities and free massage all added to the event, as did instant retreval of results both for individuals and for the team competition. Marshall support around the course was also great. Running though the night, the way lit by headtorches and glow sticks was another superb experience, and the team comeraderie was amazing :o). A truly wonderful weekend, enjoyed by all.
Huge thanks to everyone who was there and ran - here's to next year :o). We can still hear the beeps of people crossing the line as their timing chips went off.
Much will be written of the events that took place that weekend, and our heroes will be revered from generation to generation, but for those eight they will forever live with the knowledge that a Northbrook vest really does smell when you’ve worn it for twenty four hours. - Alix and Paul
