Stafford Half-Marathon - 20 March

  Lisa Bragg   1:44:33

My first race after breaking my leg in November, my initial goal back in January was to just to complete the run. My friend, who was local and had run the race before, told me it was a flat course and as training had gone well I revised my goal to 1.50. It was a lovely day, the course started in Stafford Market Square and soon took us out into the countryside. Whilst not hilly the course was definitely undulating, but very enjoyable, helped by the supporters who had turned out along the way. Winding our way back to Stafford we crossed a couple of rivers and ran along a disused rail track, nice and flat, which helped. Not knowing the area and trying to concentrate on enjoying the run I actually found I was quicker than I had expected.

Water of life Half-Marathon - 20 March

  Anne Hughes   1:56:17
  Tony Hughes   1:56:22

Anne and I ran the Water of Life Half Marathon - an event in aid of supplying clean water to Africa.  We ran together as a training run for the Brighton marathon in April.  A small field of 464 runners set off from the National Sports centre at Bisham Abbey along the banks of the Thames.  We were told it was a multi-terrain race - in fact very little was on tarmac; we ran along footpaths, across bridges and fields, farm tracks and through gates - a very scenic course - thankfully it was reasonably dry!  The event was very well organized and the marshals were amongst the most enthusiastic we have ever seen. We thoroughly enjoyed the race and would recommend it if you are looking for something a little different - Tony

SIS Lighting 12 hour Race - 20 March

  Paul Stead   12h, 33m, 41s 10th solo male
  Alix Critchley   12h, 33m, 41s 2nd solo female

Held near Eastnor Castle, Ledbury, the 'race' started at 6am and as long as you'd started your last lap by 6pm, you could finish it, so there was potential for 12+ hours of running! This is the baby-brother to the Thunder Run 24 we're entered in in July. Each lap is 6 miles long, and had 1000ft of ascent in each lap - mainly in the form of the hill at the start and the 'rollercoaster' as it was nicknamed by Steady not long after. This also meant a great descent on the other side as well. There were some spectacular views too. The off-road course looped around woods, farmland, tracks and trails. We were treated to beautiful weather, and shorts and vests were most definitely needed :o).

In the 12 hours and 33 minutes we were out there - Steady and myself covered 10 laps, so 60 miles in total!

After an off-road marathon last week, the expectations were mixed for today - a flat 10k rural course. Conditions were nigh on perfect, nice and cool. There was a very pleasant surprise at the end, as we'd both managed to pull out the 2nd fastest times we've recorded over 10k. Becky was found at the end too! - Alix

The home of the British Grand Prix invited ourselves, Katie Price and 6,340 other finely tuned athletes to burn some rubber round this very flat racing circuit. As is usual there was a lot of activity in the pits before the race started, although some runners didn’t bother and just made for the run-off area. We managed to get good positions on the grid and, surprisingly for such a large field, the start was very civilised with no shunting. The first lap was a flyer forcing us to ease off the throttle a little to conserve fuel for the latter part of the race.

The organisation and facilities were excellent and the race was enjoyable save for the blocking manoeuvres of one runner at mile 6. We overtook him before the red mist descended. On the technical side, my extra weight generated considerable downforce allowing me to outbrake Martin on the corners, but Martin’s carbon fiber running tights gave him a big aerodynamic advantage on the straights. However, neither weight nor tights could get either of us onto the podium. Next year maybe we’ll try mini-skirts - Tony

It was cold and overcast on the starting line, but amazingly brightened up just as the race started. The reality tv cameras were there to film the comedy attempt Jordan made at running a half marathon, they didn't film the stick she got from the squaddies before the start unfortunately. Apparently they wanted to see her bread rolls, I don't know why. Silverstone is a great course for a PB, mostly flat and well organised with digital clocks at each mile marker. Being quite open to the elements, it is prone to significant gusts of wind, which only seemed to blow when running uphill? A good training or PB race, but I've done prettier races (scenery, not glamour models). - John

Belvoir Challenge - 5 March

  Alix Critchley   4:49:44
  Paul Stead   4:49:44

Well, it was muddy! Real proper good sticky mud that enveloped your shoes and made you feel as if you were running with a lb packet of sugar attached to the sole, and as it was mostly over muddy fields we managed to find plenty of mud!! Great cakes on the way round and a really interesting course - very well marked, apart from at one point where Steady's route on his Garmin came to the rescue! - Alix
