It was a near perfect night, in conditions that were amazingly conducive to fast running – cool temperature, low air pressure thanks to the rain and very little wind. What cyclists would call a “float night”. I knew from my warm-up running from home to the park that I was on for a good night but imagine my surprise when not only men’s captain John shot off in front of me from the gun but also Mark Baker!
The start felt fast and I was well down within the first 800m but I was getting slightly worried when John and Mark both got to the first mile marker in front of me, and I thought I was going well covering the first mile in 5m48s.... It still took me a while to get past the pair of them but after that I started picking off people all the way to the line and managed to beat a couple of guys who I’ve been near to this season.
It was a PB for me by 48secs and it was great before and after to see so many Northbrook vests out and running so well - Richard
Pinning on a race number for the first time in several years brought back thoughts of previous summer evening races, such as “I wonder if it’s going to rain again” and “What am I doing here?”
Having arrived early to collect my number, there was plenty of time whilst waiting for the rain to stop to think about a strategy for the race. Would it be the usual start slow and then get slower, or was a more scientific approach required? In the end, as it was a two-lap course, I decided I would run round once and see if I liked it. If I did then I would go round again. This didn’t quite go to plan either since, at the end of the first lap, I couldn’t quite make my mind up if I was liking it or not, so I thought I should go round again just to be sure.
At the end of the first lap I made the big mistake of gradually gaining on John Ralph and then ever so slowly passing him. For the whole of the second lap then I had to put up with the sound of John’s padding feet as he tracked me step for step. Will this torture ever stop?
Then there it was, the finish line with its welcoming band of cheering marshals and spectators, and Stuart Harris – just like the old times.
Would I do it again, and did the cake at the end make up for the personal worst time? Well, maybe. Although I could have done with a cup of coffee to go with it - RL

This race is basically the same format as the Hilly 100, with the only difference being the start/finish being at Stratford race course. Feeling good before the start at 12pm, I knew that rain was expected through the night and I was keen on getting as far along the route whilst I was dry. I set off a little quicker than planned, clocking 21 miles in 3:22, but I felt pretty good. I did slow things down to just over 2 hours for the next 10 miles, but at CP3 I tried a new electrolyte drink that made me ill. I was sick a few miles into leg 4 (probably the toughest leg), and then the rain started. I nearly quit after this leg, but I decided to continue to CP5 where I could collect my kit bag.
Steve Bottomley was due to join me for 15 miles from the 55 mile mark, so I called him thinking I may retire. Chatting to him lifted my spirits and I continued on, just changing my wet clothes at CP5. Steve helped me through the next 15 miles to CP7, where he handed the baby sitting duties to Corinna. I was dying on my feet at this point, but was still determined to see it through until the end. Having been ill, I was struggling to eat and drink, but Corinna made sure I did as I was told.
Once we got to 85 miles, Steve was waiting to take Corinna back to her car so they both could go and enjoy the rest of their day. Instead, they returned to support me all the way to the finish, taking it in turns to run with me a couple of miles at a time. My body was really broken in those last few miles, but their encouragement was amazing!
I limped across the finish line, had a few photographs as a memento, and then had a mini fainting issue. Steve, Corinna and the race organisers cared for me at the finish, and I really can't thank them enough! They were simply superb! - Dave
