The Thunder Run is an endurance event with runners competing either solo, in pairs or in teams of five or eight to cover as much distance as they can in 24 hours. It's run as a relay around a 10k course, off road with plenty of technical bits - running through woods, up and down hills, through fields.

The course, the organisation, the campsite, the scenery, the facilities, the marshalls, were second to none. From the perspective of a soloist, it was a fabulous event. The atmosphere was like nothing I have ever experienced in a running event. This was a mix between a running race and Glastonbury (without the bands). The encouragement from both participants and supporters defied belief - "Come on number 75". A great sense of friendliness, camaraderie and fellowship pervaded. The feeling of sharing in a common challenge bound us together in brotherly and harmonious action. Will I do it again? The quads say no, but I think the head will overrule them - Tony Bowe

Mark Baker had his work cut out to organise the runners assembled on the green into 15 mixed-ability teams, each team made up of 3 people of different standards based on recent handicap times. Team members themselves decided their running order. The start and finish point was the junction of Hawkes Mill Lane and Browns Lane, and the route took in the long drag up Wall Hill Road, a left turn into Bridle Brook Lane, a left into Hawkesmill Lane followed by the steepish uphill climb, and ending with a fastish downhill to the finish.

Guests from Sphinx repaid the invitation by taking the second prize, but a good anchor leg run by Paul Lawlor making a welcome return to club night helped clinch the top prize, assisted by Kevin Coughlan and a superb last leg run by Richard French.

Prizes were bottles of wine for the winning team, and chocolates for the first and second runners-up.

With a map and route directions on the web site and handed out before the event you might think that experienced club runners would have no difficulty in following signed local footpaths. Once again Northbrook AC members have proved that they are no ordinary club runners.

The leading posse of seven broke away early and successfuly navigated their way as a group to Duggins Lane where it then turned into an every man/woman for him/herself race to the finish. It was a similar story with the follow-up group led home by Cath and Craig.

Things got a bit ugly though further back when a few decided to try some deviations from the official route and, despite the best efforts of cycling Andy Kelshall to marshal them back on track, they did manage to add some significant distances to the overall route.

Under the circumstances the official distance of just under 10k and the recorded times are both somewhat academic.

Nice little race and a chance to pick up some useful WRRL points with my current run of good form. Lovely summer's evening and a fairly flat race, apart from the nasty little hill just on the 5 mile marker - Richard
