Northampton to Tring Ultra - 21 January
13 | Dave Fawkner | 7:43:54 | PB |
My first ultra of 2012 was a return to the Grand Union canal and a 45
mile race between Northampton and Tring. Having raced this last year, I
was familiar with the course and I knew it could be no worse this time
around. I was quite relaxed at the start and soon settled into a comfortable
pace, although my old shin problem flared up and I had a burning sensation
for the opening 6 miles. This soon passed and I was making good time as
I approached the first check point :-) I had a quick drink, grabbed a handful
of jelly babies and I was off again.
The miles flew by, and before I knew
it, I had covered a marathon distance in 3:56 :-) With just 20 miles to
go I knew that a PB was on the cards as I was 4 minutes quicker than the
previous year. This knowledge helped me through some difficult miles until
I met a friend manning the final checkpoint, where there were crisps and
sweets for me. With 9 miles to go, I left him and knew that I was now on
the finishing straight and still on for a good time. I was now excited
at the prospect of finishing and found some energy from somewhere. This
stayed with me right up to the finish line where I had a final sprint and
was welcomed with a medal and some refreshments.
I knew I had a PB, but
I was over the moon to hear I had finished in 7:43:54 and in 13th place!
:-) An 18 minute PB! :-)

Amanda Deavey was 2nd overall and first Senior Female, and Rebecca Smith
was 3rd Masters Lady home which means that they both have a representative
county vest for the Inter Counties at Cofton Park in March. Congratulations
to them both!
Amanda, Alix and Clare received a Bronze Medal in the Senior
Ladies team competition, and the masters team finished 8th in their team
competition. It was a great course and all of the ladies ran really well,
great racing conditions, although a little windy in places - if the field
had been any bigger it would have made the run through the wood, and the
quite narrow path, very interesting indeed!! :-)
It was great to see Bob
and Tony Hughes pop up around the course - and we were treated to some of
Becky's most wonderful fruit cake at the end - Alix
Enigma Winter Trail Marathon - 2 January
3 | Mark Baker | 3:26:37 |
The day started with lots of confusion as I tried to find the venue. It was near a Premier Inn, by a lake near Milton Keynes. In fact there are 2 different Premier Inns next to lakes in Milton Keynes, and I chose the wrong one. When I finally arrived at the right venue, the race had started. It consisted of a short 1.75 mile loop followed by seven 3.5 mile laps of the lake. The organiser kindly took me to the start and began another stopwatch for my time. I set off about 15 minutes after the rest of the field and began passing people on the first loop of the lake. The weather was good but there was a strong headwind in places. The footpaths were very runnable linked by some grassy sections. It was different starting at the back of the 60 starters and working my way through, but I could usually focus on someone ahead. I eventually finished in the top 10 from the gun, but the organiser placed me third in the final results based on my actual time. A good start to 2012.
