Top 3 finishers - Mark Baker (248)
Staffordshire Trail Marathon - 31 October
After a surprise win at last year’s inaugural event, I returned to Staffordshire
to try and defend my title. This year, the organisers had 2 events on consecutive
days, but I was only running on the first day.
The course is based in Penkridge, and features 4 laps of an out and back course
along a canal tow path for about 3.3 miles. This totals just over a marathon.
There is a water station at the turn, and another at the start/finish. The
route is flat apart from 5 locks where there are short upward inclines on the
way out, and downward inclines on the way back. The path is very narrow and
muddy in places, which is difficult when passing people in the opposite direction.
This year there was an angling event taking place, so the fishing rods across
the towpath were unexpected obstacles early on. However, it was dry on the
day and everyone was in good spirits throughout the race.
Before the race, I was announced as the defending champion and was invited
to walk up to the start line! About 30 runners lined up, and I started strongly,
leading 2 other runners along the first leg. This group stayed together until
halfway, until one of the runners dropped back a few yards. I was struggling
to stay with the leader on the 5th leg, but we turned together for the 6th
leg. The leader then increased the pace dramatically, and I had no answer.
There was soon a big gap, and I was now just trying to hold second place. The
last few miles were very tough, but I just about held on to be runner-up. The
times were a bit quicker than last year in the drier conditions.
Following tradition, the top 3 posed for a finish photo before retiring to
the Boat Inn for some welcome hot chocolate.

After the finish at The Rugby 10m, hot sausage rolls, carrot cake & chocolate
cake plus coffee. Lots of sun after the fog had cleared, a great run for us
all with a more than healthy dose of Warwickshire hills.
Just picture undulating lanes, foggy meadows and the sun beaming down! A great
morning run!! - Kevin

2nd vet |
This was an off road duathlon with 2 laps of a 5.5km run course followed
by 3 laps of a really fun 9km bike course then 1 more run lap.
The run was
pretty hilly, mostly downhill 1st half, mostly up the 2nd. There was also
a shorter race option so from the start I was behind quite a lot of the field
and didn't know where I was in my category. I managed to catch a few people
on the bike course and avoided being caught on the last run despite resorting
to a run/walk on some of the steeper climbs.
To say I was surprised to find
I'd bagged 2nd place in the vets was an understatement!

This was a debut Marathon for Chris therefore a PB.
My attempt to go sub 3.00
didn’t quite go to plan. Just outside target of 1.28 for first half due to
slow start but completely blew up at 15 miles and had to jog/walk to the finish.
Should have had what the marshals/volunteers had for breakfast because I’ve
never had such enthusiastic support in a race before - Peter

A combination of perfect weather, a pancake flat course, very soggy ground
and a great team spirit made the 2012 Midland XC relays amazing fun. Everyone
since has signalled their intention to continue their XC careers (with some
tall teacher types also seeing the benefit of perhaps buying some size 13 spikes
before the next one!)
Well done to Northbrook ladies for coming 8th out of 19, and congratulations
to Amanda for getting the 2nd fastest time of the day, only 15 seconds off
the fastest time. The men also 'held their own' coming 23rd and 31st out of
39. Godiva and Kenilworth had strong sides out and came 6th and 7th respectively.
In summary, this was actually great fun, bring on the the league and promotion
to the 2nd division! - John Wilson
