Times are chip times

Well, there were high hopes for the London Marathoners on Sunday, brought on by some excellent performances at Brighton the previous week plus some very high standard targets (sub-3) for Martin, Amanda and me. Further drama was to be had with Rich Hands suffering an injury leading up to the race with only McNaney’s magic hands getting him to the start line.

The weather forecast promised ideal weather but after 6 long months of training in snow and ice the warm sunny conditions put paid to most runners ambitions of achieving their full potential. The experience of Mark Baker showed with a cracking 3:10 time, and the resilience and talent of Amanda rewarded her with a 3:16 in her full marathon debut. An incredible time made even better taking into account her pace maker fell apart at mile 8! A combination of recovering from illness and the tough conditions meant that Martin struggled to achieve his goal, but he’ll be back with another sub-3 attempt very shortly. Some very solid performances from the Tony’s (Hughes and Bowe) and Katy, who achieved a PB in her first outing in a Northbrook vest were eclipsed by the welcome to the pub for Richard Hands who battled through injury to complete the marathon.

Special mention has to go to Jack Langman, who placed 13th in his age category with a time of 4:16. A true inspiration to us all. Congratulations also goes to Anne and Rob, who along with the Tony’s put in some very solid performances ignoring the moans from me about weather, pollen, sunstroke, heat, crap shoes, dust, pollution etc. and just got on with the job in hand.

Special thanks go to the fantastic support in 3 different locations across the course. If it wasn’t for the Northbrook supporters I’m sure that it would be more than just me who wouldn’t have made it to the finish line. You made me realise how important it is to finish what you have started. Thankyou.

I’ll be back next year……..watching - John

Times are chip times

It was a welcome return to firm concrete (and a little bit of track) following a very muddy and difficult cross country season. The first race of the Warwickshire Road Race League brought some great weather and a decent crowd to Leamington to watch what is widely known as a fast 10km course. It was a great opportunity for some to kick start their training and for others to test improved fitness from the many cold months of marathon training over the Winter.

No real surprises on the day, a little detour from km 9 to 10 possibly added a few seconds on to everyone’s time due to some extra twists and turns.

Great to see so many Northbrookers doing the race, plus plenty of welcome supporters too. I realised at the end that the finish area would have benefited from the new Northbrook Gazebo, but maybe next year - John
