The day for the Yellow team started at 5:30am, when I decided that I couldn't be sure whether Will would get to the start on time, and therefore I needed to get to Stratford before 7am! I needn't have worried, as Will was doing his customary 'use the local shop toilet' before the start of the race. It took a bit of persuading but they relented eventually!

The next difficult moment was Will realising that his first time wearing his Northbrook vest (as a second claim member) meant he had to explain to his first claim club (Leamington) why he wasn't running for them! Needless to say he acted like the true man. Lied and hid at the back of the field!

The race started at a tremendous pace with all starters representing an 'A' team with the exception of Kenilworth and Northbrook who had a male 'B' and a mixed team respectively. Kenilworth, Bourton and Leamington quickly created a lead from the rest of the pack. My attempted support of the Kenilworth B team runner clearly wasn't appreciated as a reply of 'B team my a**e!' resulted from my encouraging cheering. Clearly not happy with the team selection! The first handover went without a hitch after a modest 1:07 from a 'returning from injury' Will and Dave Almond was off.

Despite excuses about lack of fitness Dave still managed a very respectable 1:07 for arguably the hardest leg of the day (apart from leg 9 of course). At this point I was at home, having breakfast, cutting the lawn, and generally getting more and more nervous as some decent leg times started coming through on the phone, Wheeler - 1:15, Winch 1:13 (with an excuse relating to too much alcohol a couple of evenings previous), Baker - 1:07, Fellows 1:07, Vinny - 1:13.

By this time the temperature was up to a nice 18 degrees and I was waiting very impatiently for Steve to arrive at the start of leg 9. News had come through of the disappearance of TTT. Where was he? Had he been abducted by aliens? Had a magical absence of black on yellow arrows appeared just for the Black team's leg 7 runner? Would we ever see him again?

Steve came flying around the corner to the changeover point of leg 9 and handed over to me. The leg started well, catching up a Massey Ferguson B team runner within a few hundred metres and a Sphinx B team runner on the first hill. It was going well. I like going uphill. We train going uphill. We DON'T train going downhill. The 1.5 mile downhill stretch started off OK, it was nice, a great view, not too steep. Then the gradient increased, and my quads started tightening, and suddenly going downhill was painful and not nice. Thankfully the bottom of the hill quickly appeared (after a 5m 30s mile) and 5 mile run in to the finish of the leg commenced. But it suddenly wasn't quite as easy as it was before. The quads that had been ripped to shreds on the vertical 1.5 mile drop suddenly had to try and power the body horizontally. Which they did significantly slower than they had before the drop! The rest of the leg went fairly painfully and suddenly the end was in sight, and the handover to Amanda was in sight. A quick check of the watch showed 1:04! Quite pleased with that! On closer inspection it showed 1:04:59……and a distance of 9.8 miles. Best not tell anyone that then. But there was good news!

We had found the Tall Teacher called Tony. A note was made on the mobile phone in preparation for the next Northbrook Awards Night, right under the 'Marathon Sick Bin' entry.

Amanda set off like a bat out of hell ably support by me, Julie, Mark, Vinny and Pete. She quickly made up ground on the Sphinx A runner and started to close on the next A team runner, but she was rapidly running out of time. The leg ended in the car park in Stratford with the now familiar 'Deavy Gurn'. A great run of 1:08 on a 10.2 mile leg had secured Northbrook a B team second place trophy (or glass paperweight). We were beaten only by a Kenilworth B team that had enough talent to come 3rd overall.

A fantastic day for Northbrook, with an unprecedented 4 teams and 40 runners taking part without a hitch (a little lie maybe). Places will be hard to come by next year as there were a number of comments from supporters who wanted to take part next year. a 5th team perhaps?

Well that's my report over with. The paperweight has joined the cross country plaque, and the technical T-shirt (small was OK) has already got tonight's dinner on it. Success - John.
