We entered this race a while back on a whim to see what it would be like to run a half marathon distance but on trails
and I can honestly say we loved it!. We guessed it would be something like 2 laps of the Thunder Run back to back and
it was. The start was the other side of Milton Keynes in the sunny resort of Leighton Buzzard and was very well organised
with plenty of marshals around to supervise and guide us round. The first 6 miles lulled us into a false sense of security as it appeared to be relatively mud-free and flat. However, this soon changed as we turned off the canal towpath and immediately had approximately one mile of very steep uphill through thick gloopy mud.
I was very glad to see a water station at the
top of the climb before we headed off into the fantastic woods. This part of the run slowed us down a lot as there were
tree roots and mud to contend with but it didn't dent our spirits, we carried on with smiles on our faces chatting away!.
The finish seemed to come round very quickly. After a very flat final couple of miles we turned the corner to see the 'finish'
banner ahead.
The only downside to the race was the lack of shower facilities at the end. Yes, you could have a shower if you wanted,
providing you paid the leisure centre the princely sum of £3.40. Baby wipes and flannels it was before heading off to
the local pub for a well deserved drink and something to eat.
Would I recommend this as one to do - yes definitely :-) - Sarah

Brian Hewetson and I ran this cross-country race at the weekend. There were 535 runners and 527 finishers over the 15.6 mile run. It’s a great route which includes hills, muddy fields, tracks, canal and river towpaths in the Leicestershire countryside between Leicester and Loughborough. It’s a walkers' and runners' challenge which means several stops with hot and cold drinks, cakes, flapjacks, sandwiches and jelly babies. and there's hot soup and custard and crumble at the finish. we chatted to a couple of Sphinx runners, but there didn't appear to be any other Coventry participants around. It’s a cheap one to enter too. Highly recommended - Claudie

I’m still on a high!
I’ve had some amazing experiences with Northbrook over the years, including promotion last year from Division 3 to Division 2 but for some reason Saturday at Newbold Comyn, for me, epitomised what Northbrook as a club is all about. The day started with a great Women’s League race, with Lyn, Liz, Claire & Linda making up a strong ladies team finishing 26th on the day, above our local rivals Massey Ferguson and Sphinx AC. A great result which I’m sure will encourage more of our ladies to turn out at the next race at Burbage Common in Nuneaton in December.
The men's race was the usual chaotic 750+ runners squeezing their way around the tight Newbold Course. A slight change in course removed some of the bottlenecks but still made it difficult to overtake early on if a good start hadn’t been made. Steve Flanagan made the early running (yes, Steve Flanagan) although it does appear that the early exuberance cost Steve dearly a little later on. Still, there is talent there and I’m sure it won’t be long before Steve is up there at the end too. The course was a long one (6.75 miles), including the climbing of Kilimanjaro three times, a ditch the size and depth of the English Channel and some tough underfoot conditions elsewhere. Overall therefore a PERFECT cross country course. Martin Winch and I made some early running, but were soon caught by the ever present Mick O’Shea after the first lap. My birthday celebrations cost me some time on the second lap but this didn’t stop Martin and Mick from battling it out for that first counter prize. Martin finished the strongest, pulling out a 15 second lead in the last lap to claim the victory, a first for a number of seasons to have a new name at the head of the field for Northbrook. A great sight.
The rest of us came back in droves (I counted them out, and counted them back in). The grin on Steve Flanagan’s face at the end of the race painted the whole picture. This was a great day. It was an emotional day for Rich Hodge, who this time last year was having back surgery, and just 12 months later staking a claim for a first team counter. Also fantastic to see James Joyce back from injury and Stu Lumsden in his first XC race for the club. A special thanks also has to go to the supporters, some of who (Corinna & Sarah) managed to get muddier than the runners, but shared the same grin as the runners at the end.
Overall it was a great result for Northbrook Men in our first season back in Division 2. The higher standard certainly showed, with our first three counters in the first 71 places would have been top 15 last season. Just goes to show how much we are going to rely on every runner to give their all. Rich said it all in his Facebook post mentioning that our B team took points from the Sphinx A team, showing just how important it is to get as many runners out as possible, it is impossible to have too many.
Northbrook ‘A’ sit in 13th place after Race 1, 3 places and 200 points above the relegation places. We are just 10 points behind local rivals Massey Ferguson, and 190 in front of Sphinx who unfortunately occupy one of the relegation places at the moment. Our ‘B’ team also did extremely well, coming 8th on the day, smack bang in the middle of the table - John
