Wow Christopher's 2nd marathon, and in 3 weeks. We really enjoyed this event on our doorstep.

There were lots of water stations and happy marshalls. The greenway was nice first lap, but on the 2nd the route changed a little and took us into Long Marston, making it 5 miles on greenway from 20 to 25. I found this tough on my blistered feet but dug in and kept smiling.

Will definitely do next year - Linda

Boston Marathon - 21 April

13569 Mark Baker   3:43:50

The Boston Marathon this year was a special event after the bombings at the finish line last year. The organisers were concerned about attendance, but there was huge interest in the race with 36,000 entrants qualifying to run. Over a million spectators lined the route and there was huge support at the finish area.

Security was massive, but everyone was determined to ‘take back the race’ for Boston. Banners and t-shirts declared ‘Boston Strong’, and provided a great atmosphere of hope and resolve for the future.

There was a moment of remembrance at the start for everyone affected by events in 2013. It was also inspiring to see some of the injured people from last year taking part in the race.

It was a privilege to represent the club at this important event. It was one of my slowest marathon times, but it didn’t seem that important for once. Everyone’s main aim was to cross the finish line that day. During the race, spectators urged me on, shouting ‘you got this’ at every mile. Someone even recognised my club vest at 24 miles. It was a guy from ‘Fetch’ runners who knew Alix Critchley-Almond. He had injured his hamstring but he was going to get to that finish line.

A USA guy won the event for the first time in years, and a USA lady led for ages, and set a PB, before eventually finishing seventh. It was all headline news and it lifted everyone’s spirits.

The pre- and post-race parties had a great atmosphere as well, and I was made to feel really welcome. It was a truly memorable weekend.

Manchester on a grey Sunday morning is not the most appealing place to be but it was made all the brighter by my fellow team mates who had also gathered to run what has been billed as a flat, PB course.  To be honest, I was filled with worries as I have been nursing an injury for the last 2 weeks and only got the all-clear from my doctor two days before the marathon. I thought that I had a stress fracture but apparently not, just bone fragments floating around my ankle!  I was advised that I could do the race but was also told to be sensible and take it easy.  With this in mind, I did as I was told, put my sensible head on and headed for the start line knowing that my finish time would not be good, but also knowing that I would finish - at some point!!!
The race itself was congested for the first 4 or 5 miles as it skirted round Salford so that the crowds could cheer us all on, but we runners took it all in our stride as we tried to admire the views on either side of us (for views I mean, shops, offices, warehouses and the occasional pub!!).
Water stations were plentiful - unlike another race that was being held at the same time!!  Marshals were fantastic and the crowds were very noisy!!!  We did eventually see a couple of fields at about 16 miles but to be honest, the majority of the course is through built-up areas. If you like city marathons, then I would recommend this as one to do. If you prefer a bit of scenery en route, then perhaps choose another one.
Good T-shirt and medal at the finish, along with the usual oddities in our goody bag (sachets of Worcester Sauce and womens' vitamins tablets).
Personally, I won't do this again. Yes, it's flat but, having trained on Clive's lumpy routes every Sunday, dare I say I missed the odd hill or two along the way.  However, the company over the weekend was fantastic and for that reason I can say the weekend was a complete success.
Just one small point........don't bother staying in an Ibis Budget hotel.......its called Budget for a reason - Sarah
