Northbrook Club Competitions
Do you want to know more about how the Northbrook Race Championship and other club competitions work? Well, here’s a little guide that explains it all.
Thanks to Kevin Coughlan, Northbrook Race Championship Administrator, for contributing to this content.
What is the Northbrook Race Championship?
It is a points based competition in which points are scored according to finishing times achieved for races over 8 distances. The race distances:
Northbrook Summer Handicap 5Km
5Km
5 miles
10Km
10 miles
Half-Marathon
20 miles
Marathon
All races completed over these distances will qualify, regardless of the surface on which they are run. The championship period spans the calendar year.
How are points scored?
During the year the runner with the fastest time in an age category for a distance to date is awarded 200 points, the next fastest 199 points and so on, and the points scored are aggregated across the race distances. Age categories are All Men, All Women, Veteran Men (MV35, MV45, MV55 & MV65) and Veteran Women (FV35, FV45, FV55 & FV65). As the year progresses and more and more runners complete the distances the points tables give an indication of the finishing times needed to be achieved to move up the table.
If a runner completes more than 5 distances in the calendar year, the points for the best 5 distances are aggregated.
What is the Greatest Mileage Competition?
This is decided by the highest aggregate distance run in the year, calculated from all the race distances reported. Where an event distance is not stated on the club website the advertised event distance is used. There are separate competitions for men and for women.
What is the Equilibrium Cup Competition?
The Equilibrium Cup competition runs in the background throughout the year and is based on a set distance that is decided by the membership annually. Inaugurated in 2020 it is now an annual event, the winner receiving a handsome trophy. It is an individuals competition with a built-in gradient equalising factor. For a detailed explanation of it works read our Equilibrium Cup post.
How do I report my race results?
Submit your results using the Results Upload form and they will be included in the Race Championship and Club Competition tables. Submit your result by Monday and points and distances will be added to that week’s tables.
What are the various tables?
The times and distances of submitted race results are compiled into a cloud-based multi-tab worksheet accessible via links on Northbrook AC web pages. The contents of the various tabs are explained below.
Race Championship Table
The table is differentiated according to gender as there is a separate competition for men and for women.
The men’s table showing the category positions in the left hand columns. In the body of the table the times recorded and points awarded are shown. At the time of publication only three race distances have been recorded.
The women’s table, similar to the men’s table above.
Greatest Mileage Competition
Complementing the Race Championship a Greatest Mileage competition is based on the total miles of all the race results submitted.

Race Profiles
The Race Profile tab shows every runner’s race history for the year. Here you can see if you have submitted all your race results.

Parkrun Data
If you compete in Parkrun as a Northbrook athlete your Parkrun data will be included under the Parkrun tab. It is not necessary to submit Parkrun results as these are gathered from Parkrun’s Consolidated Club Report. It includes data from all Parkruns worldwide.

The first report (above) is grouped by runner in descending time order both by runner and by time within the group. The second table on the right is a filtered list of those who achieved a top ten placing, both overall and by gender.
The second report (below) displays a week-by-week/first to finish analysis, showing the latest week first. A second table displays the most popular venues and the fastest times run. The third table counts the number of Parkrun appearances for each Northbrook athlete.

The Equilibrium Cup
To be included in the Equilibrium Cup Competition you must submit your race result data on the Virtual Events Upload Form, irrespective of any other submission to the results pages.
You can submit as many race results as you like for the specified distance between 1 January and 31 December.
