Leg 4, Brockhampton to Chedworth (10.1 miles) - Paul Andrew

I arrived for leg four (whose idea?!) on a warm morning, lacking fitness but confident of something under 58 minutes. I planned to go steady to halfway and push on from there but it actually went more like this;

Set off at a comfortable pace, blowing a bit on the first hill but still comfortable, starting to suffer after fifteen minutes, around three miles ran out of steam, nothing in my legs, four miles stopped to walk (!) and drink (water, maybe should have been something stronger), feeling generally rough, tight calves starting to restrict my running after halfway, another walk around six miles, this time to avoid pulling my calf on steep uphill, just trudging from here on, legs not working at all but trying to plough on, get water squirted in my eye by sister around seven miles - no energy to swear, strangely felt better tackling the last climb and managed to get running a bit, taking two more places, handed over after just under 69 minutes, worst race ever: fact!

Overall, very disappointed with such a poor effort but good to get out for my first proper race for Northbrook and witness some great efforts from the rest of the team. Next stop Birmingham League!

Paul Andrew.
