Small fields of runners for this fairly local 10k which is a two lap course skirting round the town centre and using some of the (paved) canal paths. Nice and flat and hardly any congestion so worth doing if you want a ‘quiet’ event. Very well marshalled and a decent medal for our efforts.

Seven Northbrookers did the club proud today in the beautiful sunshine, and all of us came in well under the hour. Glad I got to do this one, it’s a little gem – Sarah

We had 32 Northbrookers run at the local Warwick University cross-country relays, fielding eight teams of four across the women, men and mixed categories.

It’s a great taster event for cross-country and being only 2 and a bit miles, it’s fast and furious. The going was soft underfoot, the traditional puddle was not too deep but the inclines were still tough.

Up against the students from local universities we had a credible fourth place finishes both for our men and women – Sally

SIMON ALDRIDGE

Drive up on a very misty Saturday morning to Carsington water to tackle a trail half marathon. The reservoir was stunning and the views were also stunning. Lots of support all the way around and I managed to keep up with Stu for about 8 miles, then the hills hit us hard.

Anyway we both got to the end and Stu was only 19 seconds ahead of me, which is pretty good for me – Simon

Abingdon Marathon – 20 October M

Eight of us had signed up to the PB potential of the Abingdon Marathon. Training had been intense with the lanes of Allesley and Coventry being hammered by the Level 1 and Level 2 groups. Speeding fines were mentioned when the Level 1 guys were peaking.

As the date got closer the frustration of taper started and the weather took a turn for the worse. As it went, on the day the weather could have been far worse. Gusty winds and a light drizzle for most of the event were perfect for keeping our engines cooled. With support from Damian, Tracey and Liam’s family we were kept focused. The race started on a running track and finished on a running track. We separated out to where we wanted to start and it started.

26 miles is a long way and the race plan needs to be robust, and back-up plans are a must. For me, the back-up plans were key to me battling my demons. My aim was to average 9 min miling for as long as I could then hang on for dear life. As it went 22 miles was the point when tiredness kicked in for me. Just having caught up with Danny he swore and kicked on, accelerating away. I pulled my big boy blue shorts tighter, lifted my shoulders and soaked up the cheers from all the marshalls and supporters. They were needed to get me to the end. Plan A and Plan B were achieved; Plan C was missed by 2 minutes but I could still walk.

The course is good, flat and fast, and the marshalls were amazing. With your name on your number the locals and the marshalls made you feel special encouraging you by name. Our own supporters were everywhere, giving us the encouragement we needed when it was needed. Five PBs, 7 finishers – mission accomplished.

Well done guys – Spencer

Rugby Half-Marathon – 20 October HM

  Timothy Devenport 1:57:32

Inspired by others in the club taking on the cross-country races, Ilmington 10km and Abingdon Marathon, I took on the Rugby Half-Marathon, which turned out to be a bit of a toughie. the course was more undulating than I thought it would be and the long run up the old railway path, a straight line up a gradual 1% for over a mile, seemingly never ended. I got there in the end, happy to still manage a sub-2hr time, despite it not being a PB, and picking up another t-shirt and medal for the cabinet.

Call it a training run eh? – Timothy

The official first cross-country of the 24-25 season and we had a good uptake. Seasoned experienced runners and new to cross-country running runners, they all turned up. No drop outs meant the organisation was very easy, they all laced up, pinned up and toed the line.

The course had a slight change to normal, but still included all the favourite steep climbs, the roundabout route in the fields and the disused trail section. A great turnout and everyone gave everything the could. A great shoutout also to the supporters, ensuring our sunbursts did not take their foot of the pedal at any point.

Well done all, next up Warwick Uni – Spencer

Civil Service Cross Country Championships – 16 October OTH

28 Damian Pharoah 0:38:18
36 Rob Richardson 0:41:08
54 Mark Baker 0:47:45

The annual Civil Service cross-country championships took place at the usual hilly venue of Parliament Hills Fields in London. It was a surprisingly warm day there for October.

Former Northbrook member Tim Wright led all of us home again, finishing in 18th place in 36.57.
Damian was first of the current Northbrook runners, while Rob ran well before heading back to Northbrook to lead a training session later in the day. For me it was a steady run on a tough course.

It was great to catch up for a pint afterwards, before heading our separate ways. – Mark

Chicago Marathon – 13 October M

  Steve Turvey 3:14:04

I got a Good For Age time quick enough for Chicago so decided to give it a go. It’s not cheap to get there, or stay there during marathon weekend, so definitely a one-off. The course is flat but busy, which meant a lot of weaving, in the first half especially. I tried to stay with a 3:10 pacer (and managed it for first half). The second half was all about trying to beat 3:15. I just about did it.

The crowds were immense. The women’s winner set a new world record, and I crossed that same finish line – only about 90 minutes later…

Peterborough Half-Marathon – 13 October HM

  Craig Holmes 1:22:57 PB

The Peterborough Half was a lovely, flat course which was well organised and there was a lot of support on the route. I would definitely recommend.

Great for a PB, as Craig demonstrated – Kirstie

A chilly start at Draycote Water this morning, I wasn’t sure what my legs had in them after a hard strength session on Friday. I started off with Claire to the first hill then I pulled away. I managed to catch up with Jenn and tried to stick with her for a bit but she was flying and I couldn’t hold on to her.

I was very happy to finish as the long drag at the end went on for ever. Quite a few PB’s from the Northbrookers today and fantastic running from everyone. Happy with 56:02, fastest 10k this year and pleased Cliff couldn’t catch up with me – Joanne

Had a great run! Pushed on the opening 2km because it was flat. Got into a rythm after the first hill and pushed all the way – Timothy

Ladybower Reservoir Trail 22k – 12 October HM

  Kyle Turner 2:59:43
  Jane Ward 4:31:45

A great event by Run Through Trails. I walked the hills, ran the run-able and embraced the mud, ss well as the spectacular views. I would recommend this run to anyone who fancies a change from the tarmac – Kyle

A great trail 1/2 with a 52k event the same day. Over 1000 runners took to the hills with a steady climb to start with, slight rain and rather cold. We then went through mud and what felt like 100 stairs to the summit of Win Hill, but so worth the climb for the amazing views. Then down hill through some lovely woods to the first aid station. Undulating then back to the finish on stoney paths and wooded areas – Jane

Chester Marathon – 6 October M

  Joe Shaw 3:19:00
  Dave Fawkner 4:59:21

Chester has always been a favourite marathon of mine, so with my 9th time pacing, I opted to support the 5 hour runners. My legs were still recovering from the run in the Thames from the week before.

DAVE FAWKNER

The start line featured several nervous runners, but they soon embraced the challenge and stuck with our relaxed pacing method. It’s always great to see first timers. The weather was good, although still a little warm for me. My new shoes were good and felt like they were helping me keep the constant cadence. My only failing was not taking any food for energy.

The halfway point was perfect with 2 minutes banked ahead of schedule. The first half of the course is gentle rolling countryside shortly after we leave the town, but I knew the second half had a few small bumps late on, and the distance is nearly always 26.4 for me. The party bus kept on trucking through the second half. We managed to keep a number of runners with us, but sadly miles 18 to 24 always see the pack thin down a little. As long as they see our badminton racquets, we hope they can still get the finish close to the 5 hours.

We marched up the last hill at mile 25, and then the last bit was just a well-supported enjoyable mile. We finished in 4:59:21, so perfectly a decent days pacing. I can now relax until my next call up for Manchester and Chester next year.

Who’s with me? – Dave
